From the corner, Bryan Sierra is clutch.

With 57 seconds remaining in regulation, the senior forward connected with Sean Mitchell for the go-ahead goal to give St. Anthony’s a 2-1 victory over Northport Monday at Cy Donnelly Field.

“I was just thinking we have to put this in,” Sierra said. “I had to try and make the best out of this corner and Mitchell was there to put it in. We always do good on corners.”

That goal came after Northport’s Sean McArdle tied the game off a rebound from Rob Leamey’s save with 3:15 left in the second half.

“We were trying to put some pressure on them and put the game away but they got one back late,” said Mitchell, a senior defender. “But we got one back at the end and that’s what matters. Sierra came in off the bench and put up a great ball. I was just in the right spot at the right time and was able to put it in. This was a good win for us.”

St. Anthony’s (4-0-1), ranked No. 4 in the Tri-State by News 12 Varsity, couldn’t find the back of the net until midway through the second half when senior defender Matt Barresi headed in a Sierra corner.

“I kind of made eye contact with Sierra before the corner,” Barresi said. “He knows where I like him to send the ball, right on top of the sticks. He put it there and I was just able to rise up and put it in.”

That goal gave the Friars the momentum, but Northport (6-1) did not go down quietly. Both teams were held scoreless for 63 minutes, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. The Friars had an 11-8 edge in shots with Leamey making seven saves.

“This was a great match,” said St. Anthony’s assistant coach Don Corrao. “Northport came in very prepared. They are well organized and well coached. They were taking it to us in the second half a little bit. We just couldn’t get our attack going for most of the night. We made some changes and some guys came up big in big moments. It is a good win at home.”
