NEW CREW HEAD COACH - Patrick Clary

3.0 years ago @ 9:26AM

Patrick Clary - Named HEAD CREW COACH

Friar Alum Patrick Clary 13’ will now sit at the head of the bow for the St. Anthony’s Crew Team. The Friars have hosted an official crew team for 9 years and Mr. Clary will lead both the girls and boys in their continued success. The team has enjoyed top honors with a New York State Championship regatta title and several top 3 finishing boats in Long Island Championship events.

Mr. Patrick Clary has been an assistant coach for the past five years and will build upon Shayne Lewis’ successful traditions’ who became head coach in 2013. During Clary’s five year tenure they earned five National Championship Regatta qualifications and a handful of New York State medals. “This is a great opportunity to become the Head Coach.  I will miss working with Shayne who took a good opportunity in the Central Islip School district this year. I’m very excited to start a new chapter for Saint Anthony’s Crew.”

The 2020-21 school year brings new challenges but Coach Clary states, “In the past few years the team has worked hard to develop an excellent team culture.  We’re looking to continue to develop that culture in spite of adversity, and capitalize on the time we have to find boat speed.” Coach Clary rowed for Saint Anthony’s for four years, and then at Marietta College. Those many years of experience have allowed him to develop a philosophy, “that good people make good rowers,” and he hopes to instill this in his new team.

Coach Clary can be found in the Science department teaching Physics for the past three years perfectly positioned for the support of his athletes both on and off the water. As rowing competes in two seasons, both fall and spring, Mr. Clary’s classroom presence will continue to foster camaraderie between him and his rowers throughout the year. With over 40 total boys and girls committing to rowing each season the team has the opportunity to travel to Saratoga, Virginia, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the Head of the Charles Regatta in Massachusetts, and all over Long Island to participate against other strong clubs.

“Crew is a unique club sport for St. Anthony’s with two seasons and opportunities to travel.  Coach Clary’s commitment to the program will continue to draw members and foster success. I’m excited for him and the program,” said Athletic Director Joe Minucci.
