The Girls’ Cross Country season ended with a bang! The team came into this season knowing that they had to make up for the loss of four strong seniors that were on varsity last year. They set their expectations high, with the goal to qualify for the New York State Federations Championships on Nov. 20th.

2021 NSCHSGAA Cross Country Champions (left to right) Annalise Olsen ’25, Olivia Czoch’ 25, Kiera Udell ’23, Emma Rodriguez ’23, Blair Davi ’23, Lauren Matyka ’23, and Katherin McConnachie ’24 Coach Olivier St. Aude

This season, the team made a huge effort to “pack run”. This is when the team gets out and stays together for the first half mile of the race. Coach O comments: “We had to have the girls learn how to run in a group and understand how to pace. Pack running was one of the reasons we had such great success. Overall the team had a great season due to us learning how to pack run and understand pace”.

Learning this technique helped us in our first major victory, winning the NSCHSAA Varsity League Championship at Sunken Meadow, with 5 of our 7 girls placing in the top ten.  Junior Kiera Udell finished 2nd , freshmen Olivia Czoch – 3rd and junior Blair Davi 4th overall to help score a low 28 points.  Kate McConnachie, a sophomore, finished 7th and Lauren Matyka, a junior, 8th. All five earned All League Honors by running under 17:30.0 on the 2.5 mile course. Varsity then went on to take first place at NY Cities Intersectionals, and secured a spot in the New York State Public School Federation meet. Runners Udell and Czoch lead the team to achieve the goal they set at the beginning of the season with the team finishing 21st overall with over 280 individual girls running that day.

This young team gained tremendous experience at Federations with half of the team being made up of freshmen;  Czoch (freshman), Annalise Olsen (freshman), Nicolette Scaprinato (freshman), and Reilly McKinley (freshman). Upperclassmen Udell (captain), Emma Rodriguez (junior & captain),  Riley Griffith (sophomore), and Lindsay Yakaboski (junior) are excited for next year. Olsen comments “the course was definitely not as tough as Sunken Meadow. There were a couple of hills, but nothing compares to Cardiac Hill.” Cardiac is one of the hardest parts of our home course at Sunken Meadow State Park, and training there has prepared the girls to take on harder courses such as Bowdoin Park, where the New York State Federations Meet is held.

Udall & Czoch at the NY State Championships

With cross country coming to a close, the future looks bright with all varsity runners returning next year. The team is hoping to qualify and make it to New York State Regionals in 2022 with a higher place finish at Federations. Now the team is preparing and training for winter track. “I’m looking forward to this indoor season, coming off a fun and successful cross country season. The girls are very fit and will definitely make some people wonder how well they will run indoors. I can’t wait to get rolling on this season” says Coach O.
