Win: 63 - 34
Congratulations to our girls!! They brought their AA Games to the League Finals on Saturday at CW Post.  The first quarter it was evident that both teams had final game jitters. Shots that would normally fall were not going down for either side. The teams each had small scoring runs and the score at the end of the first quarter was St A's 9 to St Mary's 7. The back and forth continued with the score at the end of the half St A's 21 and St Mary's 20. Our girls came out with resolve after half time and proceeded to shut down St Mary's star player with air tight deny ball defense. And although Tamia Lawhorne ran into foul trouble racking up her fourth before the end of the half making her unable to return until the fourth; her twin, Taylor Lawhorne and and Syd's sister, Synclair Taylor filled in admirably and held our ground for her down low.  Using discipline, patience and pinpoint execution, our girl's outscored St Mary's to go up by 9 at the end of the third. Sydney Taylor picked the perfect time to turn in her all around best game of the season, logging her first Double-Double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Ashia Smith also turned in one of her best performances adding 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 8 steals.  Toni Kinard's timely outside shooting kept St Mary's from being able to sit back comfortably in a zone and only focus on Syd Taylor. Lauren Hackett earned MVP for simultaneously running our offense while stifling St. Mary's Kadaja Bailey. She, coupled with the team's swarming help defense, held Bailey scoreless in the second half. Our Final Score was St Anthony's 60 and St Mary's 34 The girls are now on to the State's Semi Finals this Friday at 6pm at St. Raymond's Boys School in the Bronx. Let's Go Friars!!!! St. Anthony's        59 St. Dominick's        21 League Record:   12 - 1  Overall: 19 - 3 Senior night was a beautiful event that featured our premier point guard and lone Senior, Lauren Hackett, receiving a beautiful plaque from the school.  St. Dominic's was on the receiving end of a 23 to 5 barrage in the first quarter as the Friars and Lauren, all in high spirits, were playing fast and loose. The second unit took over from the start of the 2nd quarter and they continued the onslaught ending the half with the Friars up 40 to 11. The complete roster played and no one from the first rotation hit the floor again except for Lauren, who was inserted back into the line up for about 3 minutes in the 4th for her swan song on the home floor. She left on a made 3 pointer to a standing ovation from her teammates! Win: 62 - 37
SAHS            62 Kellenberg     37 Friday was Senior Night for Kellenberg. They recognized 6 graduating seniors and graciously recognized our lone senior Lauren Hackett with the presentation of a white rose. The game was physical and competitive inside as we were once again outsized by Kellenberg. Never the less, the Friars stood strong. Frustrations ran high in the face of lopsided refereeing, but our girls soldiered on and steadily increased their lead. Their determination and drive allowed the entire roster to hit the floor; and our ladies in wait acquitted themselves nicely on the floor by continuing to add to our lead. Way to go Friars!! St. Mary's         77 St. Anthony's    68   Double OT League Record: 10-1    Overall record: 17-3 This game lived up to its advance billing of "The Clash of the Titans".  St Anthony's came into this game undefeated in league play and St. Mary's had only one loss, to the Friars, in OT the previous meeting. It was a furiously defensive game on both sides as shown by the half time score of 21 to 20 in favor of the Friars. The Friars held onto a slim lead as each team traded baskets until late in the 4th quarter. Unforced turnovers and some missed scoring opportunities caused the Friars to relinquish the lead, when Divine intervention, in the form of a 6th Gael on the floor, in the final seconds gave the Friars 2 Technical foul free throws. The Friars pulled even when Toni(Ice in the Veins) Kinard sunk both free throws that ensued. Time ran out on the next possession by the Gaels and into overtime we went. Two players were Superstars on the floor Tuesday night. They were St. Mary's Kadaja Bailey and St. Anthony's Tamia Lawhorne. Lawhorne was a beast on the boards and a relentless scorer down low while logging her season's 5th Double-Double! However it was Bailey, while scoring a game high 48, who proved to be unstoppable in the 2nd and final OT with both Syd Taylor and Tamia Lawhorne fouled out of the game. It was a valiant effort but "Down went the Friars"!  They will meet the Gaels again in 2 weeks at Hofstra for the League Championship. St John's Cougars                   44 St Anthony's Friars                 77    Conf 9-0  Overall 16-2 This game was a 'Tale of Two Halves".  The Cougars came out fiercely, going up by 5 to end the first quarter. They stayed up until the very end of the second quarter. Senior Lauren Hackett put up a 3 pointer near the end of the quarter to get the Friars a bit of separation and put us up by 4 to go into the half. Second half... it was all Friars! They put an end to the Cougar's hopes with lockdown interior defense. Repeated steals and turnover conversions led the Friars to a 28 to 8 third quarter. The Cougars were never able to recover again. Sydney Taylor had a game high 27 points with 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Tamia Lawhorne logged her 4th Double-Double of the season with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Lauren Hackett added 13 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists & 4 steals; Toni Kinard contributed 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists & 1 steal, while Ashia Smith also added 7 points, 3 rebounds & 1 assist. Sophomore Synclair Taylor added 2 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals before she was taken out by an errant elbow and Kayli Parham added 1 rebound and 2 assists to round out the stats. Friars  72    OLMA  58 Our Friars had no Mercy(pun intended) for Our Lady of Mercy on Tuesday. The game was decided early with a 30 to 12 score at the end of the first quarter of play. The game was chippy as it was played at OLMA and their crowd can be counted on to bring vociferous animosity. To their credit, their teams do not quit, and our bench players got pushed around in their showing in the second quarter when OLMA mounted a semi-comeback outscoring us 17 to 9. Our Friars cemented the win in the third and cruised through the 4th on auto pilot.   Scorers: Sydney Taylor        27 Lauren Hackett      20 Tamia Lawhorne    10 Ashia Smith            8 Toni Kinard             5 Ashley Soliman        2 Honorable Mention for OLMA Lauren Hammersly  24 Micela Genoa           15 Asst Coach Lynn R Miller

Coaches Choice Showcase @ Holmdel HS, Holmdel NJ, Jan 28,2018 St Anthony's   L    54     13-2 record St John Vianney   83     15-0 record Game 3 of our 3 day road show saw our high flying Friars abruptly brought down to earth after taking on the undefeated, #17 in the nation, St John Vianney Lancers.  The first quarter was an amazing display of competitive Varsity Basketbal at the highest level. However, it all came apart in the second; the wheels fell off on our Friars and our diminutive size began to show. Turnovers and missed shots led to SJV fast breaks causing our team to be outscored by 20 in that disastrous quarter! At Half time our girls regrouped, rallied and came out fighting with aggression and fierce defense to begin the third. SJV answered with a barrage of made 3s to end the quarter by adding 4 more to the deficit score. Our team held even but never really challenged again. Keep your heads up Friars!!! St Anthony's             61 Ursuline Academy    53 Game Two of the Friars's consecutive 3-game road trip was a grinding, grueling game where neither team could get more than 3 points separation from each other.  Hampered by "Lay-up Flu", our Friar fighters left over 20 points that could have given them breathing space rolling either in-and-out or around the rim!  Dogged defense was played by both sides as we came into the home stretch and the game was tied with 1:40 left to play. Our Friars dug deep and turned in impressive performances with Sydney Taylor hitting a critical 3 to put us up by 3 with less than a minute to go! Our players turned into LockDown Defensive Machines on the ensuing inbounds and enabled Sydney Taylor to come up with 2 consecutive steals for break away layups to ice the game for us in the stretch and win her MVP honors for the game.  Way to Play Team!! St Anthony's     61 St Dominick's    32 In a fun romp of a game for our team, St Anthony's Friars dominated St Dominck's Bayhawks with a 61 to 32 win. Just about everyone got in on the action logging minutes and buckets. The starting 5 of Sr. Lauren Hackett, and Juniors Toni Kinard, Tamia Lawhorne, Ashia Smith and Sydney Taylor saw very limited time, with the majority logging totals of 8 to 10 minutes for the entire game. Our Ladies-in-Waiting had to wait no more! In another highly contested game, our Friars doused the hopes of the Kellenberg Firebirds and upheld their undefeated League Record at 5-0  with an 11-1 overall record.   Although  outsized in the middle and hampered by the loss of Taylor Lawhorne to injury, the Friars played a tough defensive game with crucial minutes provided by Sophomore Synclair Taylor with 4 steals in the press.   The Friars scoring was led by the terrific play of Tamia Lawhorne with 21 points and 7 rebounds. It was a complete team effort with 16 points added by Toni Kinard in her debut start, 15 points by sharp shooter Sydney Taylor, 8 points and 6 steals by Ashia Smith and 5 points, 7 assists and 6 steals by Senior Lauren Hackett.  Way to Play Friars!!!   Asst. In what was a replay of last year's conference Finals, and a preview of this year's to come, St. Mary's succumbed in an epic game that went to overtime at 44 apiece.  Although St. Mary's Kadaja Bailey's poured in 37 points, our girls pulled out a gritty, gutsy team win for a final score of SAHS 56 - St Mary's 54. Scoring was led by 18 points from Sydney Taylor which included a clutch 3 in OT. Ashia Smith had a breakout shooting game with 3 - 3s, contributing 13 points,  and causing great defensive disruption throughout the game. Tamia Lawhorne contributed 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks while her twin, Taylor Lawhorne cleaned the boards with 11 rebounds (10 of them offensive) while also adding 8 points, an assist and a steal. Final Score 71-47 Total Domination was the theme on Saturday. Sacred Heart started off strong but we were just too good and too fast! Half time the score was St. A’s 42- SHA 20. The score steadily mounted up to a 30 point lead at which time the starters were given their Done for the Day notices and our Ladies in Waiting finished the job with a 71- 47 final tally.    Scoring was led by Tamia Lawhorne with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks (a double-double), Toni Kinard with 14 pts,4 steals, Sr PG Lauren Hacket with 13 pts, 6 assists and 6 steals, and Ashia Smith adding 10 points and 4 steals. Other notables in this Friar Road Show were the Taylor sisters with Sydney having a bad shooting day but finding a way to get it done with 5 pts, 10 rebounds and 7 assists and Synclair adding 4 pts and 9 rebounds.    Way to get it done team!!!! In an close overtime game the Friars toped Staten Island by one 70-69. This game was a test of mental fortitude. Twice our team was down with less than a minute to go... and twice they rallied to force turnovers, force an OT and finally win the game!   Gooo Friars!!!!! Our Friars just could not get buckets to fall in the first half, and it was 41-14 at the half. They came out with grit and determination and played their bigger opponents evenly in the third. In the end , the first quarter deficit was just too much to overcome and our starters came out of the game in the fourth quarter to minimize any possibility of injury. Kudos to our bench for the rowdy support and the “Never Say Die” spirit!!
