Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Kellenberg Memorial High School
5.0 years ago | Sharon Scubla
Win: 59 - 42
SAHS          59 Kellenberg   42 It was a skating rink instead of a basketball court... on a floor that defied the grip of any shoe, our girls got off to a very sluggish start. We went up 9 to 6 at the end of the first quarter and then ended the half up only 5 at 22 to 17.  Our star Syd Taylor was held scoreless in the first half hampered by a fall that left her bruised and battered, but her teammates held it down for us, keeping the Friars up on excellent teamwork and ball distribution. After a regroup at the half, and conquering the learning curve of how to play on a floor with no traction, our girls went to work punishing Kellenberg in the third with a score of 22 to 11. Syd Taylor went to work on them inside and out for 10 points in the third, aided by the play of Ashia Smith who knocked down two three's in the same quarter to combine for 16 of our Friars 22 points. Syd added another 7 points in the fourth and the entirety of the team was able to show their stuff by the game's end. Scorers: Syd Taylor                17 pts Ashia Smith             16 pts Colleen McCullagh    7 pts Kayli Parham              5 pts Toni Kinard                 4 pts Cassidy Clarke            4 pts Vic Goldrick                 4 pts Synclair Taylor            2 pts Asst. Win: 63 - 32
SAHS        63 OLMA        32 OLMA plays hard but they are just not in the same category as our Friars.  OLMA went down 19 to 8 and 19 to 6 in the first and second quarters to put them down 38 to 14.  In the second half, the entirety of our remaining roster hit the floor to show their skills. Our girls increased our lead in the 3rd quarter outscoring OLMA 16  to12, and again in the 4th with a 9 to 6 advantage. Goooo Friars!!! Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Moore Catholic High School

Win: 50 - 41
SAHS             50 Moore Cath    41 Don't let the score fool you.  Moore Catholic was clearly outclassed and never stood a chance.  The whole team was able to shake off the previous game and have a good run in their third game in 3 days. Sydney Taylor went off in the third quarter to put this so far out of reach that the coach was able to leave his development team on the floor for the entire last quarter. Moore tried to press them and left their starters in but that deficit was too much to overcome. Coach inserted a starter for a minute or two, to stabilize it in the fourth, but this one could have been won by 40. Yeeeeahhhh Friars!!!!!   Scorers: Syd Taylor       25 pts C McCullagh     9 pts G Santacroce    5 pts Ashia Smith       4 pt Cassidy Clarke  4 pts Kayli Parham     3 pts   Asst. Coach Lynn Miller

Lose: 56 - 77
SAHS Friars      56 SIA                     77 What was supposed to be a payback for an earlier loss, turned into another loss to this team that saw its star come out on fire. She missed nothing whenever the ball touched her hand. Our team went down 47 to 24 at the half, and were only able to make up 2 points of that deficit by the end of the game. We played hard but were never in it. Senior Syd Taylor poured in a valiant effort of 25 points but Staten Island's Sophia DeMauro torched us for 35!  Not a bad game on our part, but a phenomenal game by SIA. Back to Back games are tough! Keep your Heads Up Friars!!   Scorers: Syd Taylor            25 pts C McCullagh          8 pts Kayli Parham         6 pts G Santacroce         5 pts Toni Kinard             4 pts Ashia Smith            3 pts Synclair Taylor       2 pts Deanna Sassone    2 pts Jenna Dempsey      1 pt Asst. Lose: 59 - 63
SAHS Friars              59 St Laurent                 63 This was a high level Girls game from start to finish. It was a slug fest between elite teams that had the crowd cheering in delight at the display of basketball prowess on both sides.  They were big and fast and we were skilled and fast!  Our girls went down in the first quarter14 to 23 and answered in the second with a 20  to 7 run to end the half up 34  to 30. it was back and fourth in the 3rd with the Express coming back to go up 5. Our Friars answered the challenge with Syd Taylor making ridiculously tough shots to answer as our Friars battled back up again. We went down by one with 8 seconds left in the game and had the possession. A miscue after the timeout and a turnover sealed our fate. Tough loss... but a great game!!!    Scorers: Syd Taylor          33 pts, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal Ashia Smith       13 pts, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals Toni Kinard         5 pts, 2 rebounds G Santacroce      3 pts C McCullagh       3 pts, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks Synclair Taylor   2 pts, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal

Win: 70 - 39
SAHS.          70 St Mary’s.   39 In our first home game and first meeting against our AA rivals, our Lady Friars delivered a resounding message. We will beat you and anyone else that comes to play against us.  The Friars jumped out to a commanding lead of 26 to 14 to start the game and never let up. Second quarter the defense dug in and held St Mary’s Gaels to 6 points, making it 37 to 20 at the half.  St Mary’s tried to rally in the third but another 20 point quarter from the Friars made this game a done deal. A bit of intrigue was added at the end when the total of our development roster hit the floor. St Mary’s kept their starters on and started to press! Our girls Impressed by maintaining the ball and the lead and getting to the line to finish it off in high Friar style. Great win Team!!! Scoring: Syd Taylor.                 20 Ashia Smith.              16 Colleen McCullagh.  8 Gianna Santacroce.   8 Toni Kinard.                    6 Synclair Taylor.              6 Kayli Parham.                  3 Amber Williams.             2 Jenna Dempsey.              1 Coach Lynn Miller

Win: 59 - 41
Overall Record 8-4 SAHS             59 Sacred Heart     41   Sacred Heart was fired up for this first game against the Friars. They were out to prove that they could play with us and it showed in the energy in their gym.   However, our girls came in to win this game... and proceeded to do so in true Friar fashion with  lots of heart, hard-nosed defense and great team play.   The Friars went up early 18-5 in the first, and we never let them back in the door. Freshman Colleen McCullagh earned her Varsity stripes this night; but it was "Showtime Syd" that led the Friars to this 59 - 41 win over Sacred Heart.   Scoring: Syd Taylor                 30 Pts Colleen McCullagh      14 Pts Synclair Taylor            5 Pts Toni Kinard                 4 Pts Ashia Smith                4 Pts Kayli Parham              2 Pts   Asst Coach Lynn Miller

Win: 40 - 31
Notre Dame    31 SAHS             40 In a hard fought defensive battle, after playing the day before, our ladies dug in and emerged victorious against this hard nosed and relentlessly aggressive team. Our Friars held Notre Dame to 4 points in the final quarter after themselves being held to 2 in the second, and closed out the game in grind it out style. Ashia Smith was relentless at the point both offensively and defensively the entire game. Junior Synclair Taylor was valiant getting back on the floor with a sprained ankle.  Toni Kinard was a flawless 4 for 4 at the line in the final period and came up with key steals to help close this one out! Scoring: Ashia Smith        10, 4 steals, 1 asst, 2 rdbs Syd Taylor            9, 2 rbds, 1 steal Toni Kinard           8, 3 steals,4 rbds, 1 asst Colleen McCullagh  7, 9 rbds, 1 asst, 1 steal Synclair Taylor       3, 3 steals, 3 assts, 7 rebds Kayli Parham          3, 2 rbds, 1 steal Asst Coach Lynn Miller

Win: 49 - 32
SAHS            49 W Capital Prep   32 Overall Record 6-4 Conf 1-0 The Friars hit first this game! They came out with furious defensive energy and led the first quarter 15 to 5. The team continued the defensive squeeze into the next quarter to end the half up 25 to 11. Cap Prep came out fighting in the third but only managed to make up 1 point of the lead. At the end, the focus and defensive energy of our Friars put away any hopes the Prep team had of mounting a comeback! Good win Ladies!!! Win: 56 - 35
SAHS 56 W   St. Dom's 35 L Overall 5-4   Conf 1-0 Our Friars are came out a little flat against this definitely outclassed team. they let them hang with them for a few minutes and then answered the coaches call to step it up and went on a 10-0 run. Our starters held them scoreless for the remainder of the first period. Our starters only re-entered the game for less than 2 minutes in the second half and were so overpowering that we retired them to cheer on their teammates for the duration. Sophomore Gianna Santacroce broke out of her shooting slump and poured in 20 points in this first conference game of the season. Asst Coach Lynn Miller
Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Susan Wagner
5.0 years ago | Sharon Scubla
Win: 52 - 40
SAHS 52 - Susan Wagner 40 Our Friars traveled through a veritable monsoon to get to the game held at St Francis College Sunday in Brooklyn. The weather did not hamper our girls play as they held off the aggressive play of the Wagner team during the first quarter. It was a hugely defensive game at first with the first quarter score favoring Wagner 7-6. Second quarter showcased a dazzling offensive barrage of 3 pointers by Senior Syd Taylor. She hit 4 of them and a foul shot, for 13 of the quarters 20 points to put the Friars up 26 -20 at the half. The second half was a balanced team attack with senior Toni Kinard and freshman Colleen McCullagh each adding 8 points in the half with Syd Taylor contributing 2 more 3's and Senior Point Guard Ashia Smith making every possession a nightmare for Wagner with the  defensive pressure she applied. Wagner threatened once during the second half when Smith was benched with foul trouble. Once Smith re-entered the game, the Friars prevailed and closed it out for a final score of 52 to 40. Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Summit Academy and Ward Melville

Win: 64 - 43
This weekends tournaments were a tale of 2 teams. Saturday against Lauren Hansen and Ward Melville our Friars played with heart, but forgot to do the little things that make life easier against a blue collar, scrappy team. In spite of the superb performance turned in by senior Sydney Taylor, our Friars went home with a loss. Sunday was a new day with a  new team attitude! Summit Academy has speed and size, but our ladies put in a hard nosed defensive effort and concentrated on keeping their two over 6 foot players off of the boards. A fantastic team effort was put in by our senior Big 3  of Sydney Taylor(22 pts, 13 rebds), Toni Kinard(17 pts) and Ashia Smith(15  pts). Their three pronged attack wore down Summit Academy, and the addition of a spirit crushing two consecutive 3-pt shots by sophomore Gianna Santacroce to add a 4th shooter on the floor spelled the end for the Summit Eagles.  Looking good Lady Friars!!   Asst Coach Lynn R Miller
