Congratulations – Swimmers heading to NY States -
4.0 years ago

March 9, 2020

The St. Anthony’s varsity boys swimming team has a group of 8 swimmers, predominantly seniors, anticipating the entrance to the state championships. The Friars defeated arch rival Chaminade 94-92 earlier this season but suffered a loss to another top rival Fordham Prep. Going into League Champs, the team knew they would have their work cut out for them, even with the outstanding efforts of Billy Swartwout.

With leagues now over, the team will turn their focus to having a strong showing at the 2020 NYSPHSAA State Swim Champs on March 5th at the Nassau Aquatic Swim Center in Eisenhower Park. Tickets are $8.00 per person on https://gofan.co/app/events/79953 at $10.00 at the door. Congratulations boys!!

Before we get into the city champs meet, let’s look at some highlight features which occurred two months prior: Sr. Chris Stange broke a 2 decade-old short course 50 meter school record, making a time of 23.97, qualifying for states. Former Friar Nick Bedward held that 2 decade-old record of 24.32 for a soaring 20 years- now being inducted in the St. Anthony’s Hall of Fame in June! Chris also broke his former Friar brother Andrew’s short course 100 meter fly record of 57.59 by .01, holding a new-record of 57.58!

SAHS Billy Swartwout made the 1st State qualifying time of the season, leading Friars to pass Kellenberg for the team’s opening day win back on Nov. 17, 2019. He topped the league by winning the CHSAA 200 Freestyle in a time of 1:39.98, qualifying for NY State Champs. He further went on to swim the final leg of the 200 Freestyle Relay with the assist in the win, lead off leg Sr. Christoper Stange, Sr. Mark Owens and Freshmen Matthew McManus all swam a winning time of 1:25.75, claiming another CHSAA Championship title. Two titles were not enough when Swartwout found himself on top of the podium again, winning with the assist as the 4th leg of the CHSAA 400 Freestyle Relay in 3:07.96 with the same dynamic trio as the 200 Freestyle Relay. The senior Friar rounded out his day by capturing another CHSAA title in the 100 Backstroke in 51.41. Four CHSAA State titles will mean four NY State events to try and better his times.

With four teammates enjoying the top of the podium, Friar Sophomore Owen Glaser was contributing to the team success with the seventh best time in the state, as part of the 200 Medley Relay, along with Jr Caleb Neugebauer, Sr. Tim Rupnarian and Sr. Joe McLaughlin. Every point matters at a Championship meet. Owen also made his mark in the 200 IM, finishing 6th in 1:57.23, making the cut to swim at the NY State Champs, along with McManus who also swam a state qualifying time of 2:00.59 and contributed points. McManus also swam in the 100 butterfly, just missing the state cut time of 53.95 by swimming 54.02 but his sophomore year is looking very promising.

Owens and Stange will not only compete in the relays at States but enjoyed second (21.33)  and third places (21.39) respectively in the 50 Freestyle. These two teammates will continue to push each other when they again meet in the 100 Butterfly at states. Stange’s qualifying time was 50.61, earning second at the CHSAA State Champs and Owens swam a qualifying time of 51.42, standing in 5th place.

One of the sport’s long distance events, the 500 Freestyle, was swam by Jr. Richard Chiarella in 4:48.62 to finish with the 8th best state time in the CHSAA. Rupnarian captured 6th place in the 100 Breaststroke -qualifying for NY States, swimming 1:00.54.

Every point matters at championships and the whole team put in a great effort this year but unfortunately the Friars could not defend their 2019 CHSAA Title, finishing third with a total of 532 behind State Champs Fordham Prep’s 722.5 points.

Remember to go cheer on your swimming Friars for the NY State Champs at the Nassau Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park on 3/5!!
