Softball Recap

Updated on 06/03/2024

This has been a historic year for the Friars' varsity softball team. This season, they have posted a perfect 23-0 record.

On Tuesday, they won the Catholic League championship with a 6-3 win over Kellenberg. Junior Julie Murillo was named the tournament MVP. This was the team's seventh straight Catholic League championship and eighth in nine years.

The team is currently ranked number one in New York State (NYS) by both the NYS Sportswriters Association and MaxPreps. USA Today Sports also ranks them 11th nationally. This is the first time in school history that the program has received a national ranking.

This senior class has an impressive record of 91-6 in their four years, losing only one league game. They are led by seniors Bella Cruz, Mila Fiordalisi, Jackie Morra, Ava Vandernoth, Valentina Iula, Casey Steinert, and juniors Sarah Bielski and Julie Murillo.

Mila Fiordalisi just won her third straight Catholic League Pitcher of the Year award, and Jackie Morra won her second straight Catholic League Player of the Year award. Mila and Jackie are nominated for the NYS Gatorade Player of the Year award, which will be announced in two weeks.

Five of the six seniors will be going on to play Division I softball.

The team has won three consecutive state championships and will play for a fourth this Friday. They are also riding a 35-game winning streak dating back to last season. Let's go for four in a row, Friars!

“Congratulations to the Varsity Softball Team on a great season and good luck in the playoffs.”
