The 2025 season had 5 of the 15 players in the Starting lineup having played a varsity match, and 9 out of the 10 others had never played a Rugby game.

Their willingness to learn and the leadership of the veterans helped bring the team together to fall just one game short of qualifying for the State Tournament. The desire to learn, coupled with an Amazing Coaching Staff of Pat Kennedy, Dave Kennedy, Mark Griffin, Pat Brannigan, and Pete McMahon, helped make our Matches against nationally ranked teams Competitive.

The team played the first of hopefully a series of home and away matches with Memorial HS in Houston, Texas.  We flew from JFK to Houston, and our team was paired up with team members and coaches of Memorial HS on Friday night.  Played a match that was interrupted by a Tornado warning and ended up winning 56-7.  The team was treated to a Professional Rugby match Saturday night, Mass at St Michael's Sunday followed by Texas BBQ and then back to the Airport for our safe trip home.  It was an excellent experience for our players, and the only complaint from the families we were hosted by was that there wasn't enough time to spend with our team.

It was a pleasure coaching these young men again, and I wish all the seniors success in the future.

Head Coach

Coach Young Graduated from SUNY Maritime in 1994.  He was at sea as a Merchant Marine Officer until 1997.  Presently, he runs the operations department for an oil tanker broker company in Norwalk CT.  Coach Young Started Coaching Rugby in 1999 at Xavier HS.  He left Xavier when he moved to Long Island in 2006.  He then Coached at East Islip and developed a youth rugby program at South Shore Rugby in 2010, and handed over the team to one of our other coaches when he started at St Anthony's in 2019.  

Assistant Coach Pat Kennedy has served as a coach for St. Anthony’s rugby program and has played a key role in mentoring and developing the team’s competitive edge. His experience in Rugby dates back to over 35 years, 25 years  as a player, highlighted by the Sale Sharks academy squad, in the Gallagher Premiership League in the UK. His dedication to discipline, leadership, and performance has made a lasting impact on players both on and off the field. Patrick is committed to elevating the profile of high school rugby and helping students grow through sport.
