Mid Season Growth

Updated on 06/10/2022

After months of waiting, the basketball season is finally underway. This year’s season started nearly three months later than usual, and every team in the CHSAA was limited to the same three week parameters for preparation. This was a tough scenario for St. Anthony’s, as they picked their roster just over a week before their first game would be held, and could barely fit in two practices.

Sophomore Caleb Aurelien

The Friars kicked off their season with a heartbreaking loss at home to St. John’s 47-49, after a massive 4th quarter rally from down 20. The team is green on paper, with only four upperclassmen on the roster; this loss was just an example of how they still needed to gell and sharpen their skills.  A few broken plays would result in Captain Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt, forcing a tough shot as the shot clock wound down. Fate was not on the Friars’ side during the clutch time, as they would force four offensive possessions in the last minute of the game, but was not able to take the lead over the Cougars.

Junior Dakari Thomas

In their second game, the Friars would suffer a much more one-sided loss against St Mary’s 56-38, moving them down to 0-2 on the season. The outcome was inevitable with Thomas and Gaines failing to score on the St Mary’s defense, and having to force it to their inexperienced teammates who had lots of trouble contributing. When faced with this lack of scoring, Dakari Thomas had this to say about the scenario, “We need to guard, we needed to be more aggressive out there and then we did that.” In their first two games, the Friars played a 2-3 zone, but St. Mary’s proved to be too much, often resulting in simple and unpressured three pointers for the other team.

After these first two games, Captain Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt had this to say about the 0-2 start, “It was a rough start for our team but our coach preaches attitude and I think that’s what helped us get over that hump. We are slowly coming together as a whole and we are working together on the court to get more of a flow going.” The Friars would go on to win their next two games, both against Kellenberg, showing how their hard work was paying off. For the first game, Thomas put up a team high 23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 5 assists. They would win the game 54-39, and everything looked like it was starting to come together. Great performances by Will Snyder on the boards with 8 rebounds and Caleb Aurelien with 11 points were a great sign this young team was starting to gell. Thomas had to say this about his teammates’ involvement, “I definitely believe in all of my teammates and the future is very bright for the younger guys. Every person on our team is capable of scoring the ball. Coach works with the younger guys a lot in practice and they are learning and getting better every day.”

Junior William Snyder

In their second game against Kellenberg, the Friars played the game they’ve been trying to execute. Captains Thomas and Gaines balanced each other putting up 16 and 12 points respectively. The Firebirds kept it close, but the Friars did not let up their control with some great rebounding from Snyder and Aurelien with 8 each, and Thomas rounded the stats with 7 boards, 12 points and 5 steals.

Over these two games, the Friars were able to settle into their offensive and defensive game plans. On offense, they were able to show great ball movement on possessions, where they were able to get an open three, or hand off the ball to Thomas or Gaines for a great shot opportunity. These two games gave the Friars momentum and time to prepare for two more tough ones coming up at the midpoint of the season, with an improved .500 record.

The next game would be a rematch against St. John’s, and St. Anthony’s wanted to redeem themselves after a one point loss earlier in the season. Unfortunately, the Friars were not able to show up like they had in the previous games and took a disappointing 45-36 loss. Despite dominating the boards, their shots in many possessions would either never come, be forced up, or just miss. The Friars were not able to capitalize on the momentum but with an unpredictable season, they knew every win counted.

Junior Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt

In their sixth game of the season against Holy Trinity, the Friars delivered some amazing plays ending in a 45-36 win over the Titans. The Friar's defense held the Titans to the least points they’ve allowed all season. Gaines would top off his strong performance with 23 pts. Anyone watching this game could notice how dominant Gaines was, contributing half of the Friars’ points. Gaines said, “As a leader for this team I think the best thing to do is trust my teammates and coaches while I am out there and everything will come to me. Also to be more efficient while I am out there and it will start to get easier as we start gelling more.” Gaines’ prime performance helped lift the Friars to 3-3 midseason record.

The success that the team has had so far in the season has been capped off by great performances from the captains. Both Dakari Thomas and Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt are putting up around 15 ppg, and always make huge impacts every night.  Thomas says, “I need to not only score but get my teammates involved. Play as a team. My guys need to have my back, as much as I have theirs on the court. I need to work extra hard every game.” Both Thomas and Gaines have had team high 23 point games by the halfway point and believe they can expand their skills even further to lift the Friars going into the second half. “I believe and am very confident that we can make a great run closing the second half of the season. We are very young but we are getting better day in and day out and we have the correct tools to make something big out of this,” said Gaines.

At the beginning of the season, nobody really knew how this team would fare considering the number of new varsity members and lack of big minutes previously allocated to the captains. Despite this, both have been able to show their capabilities in leadership and what it takes to build a cohesive unit as juniors. Thomas says, “I knew coming into this new season losing our seniors, it was going to be tough. Learning from sophomore year and how the seniors led the team, I knew I had to do the same.” The Friars have had their definite highs and lows during this season, but at their best, their skills are impressive. Gaines says that from here on out the captains have an idea for how they can play the rest of the season, “I believe we have the potential to be one of the best contenders in this league if we stick together and trust each other. We are going to continue to get better in practice and make the best out of the rest of this season.”
