FALL BACK SPRING AHEAD

Updated on 06/10/2022

Due to the current circumstances of 2021, the Friars have had to adjust to some new rules. This includes several 7 v. 7 flag football matches, in replacement of the regular season in the fall. Luke Rizzo, senior varsity captain tells us a little about how he thinks his team has adapted quickly to the new rules despite the major changes.

Luke says, “A lot has changed due to the pandemic but my team and I were quickly able to adapt to the new rules. Offensively, we start on the 40 yard line and we are only able to pick up one first down which makes it a lot harder when in a normal game you sometimes travel over 90 yards to make a touchdown…. Being only able to pass the ball was really annoying. I am a running back, so I can’t really even play my position properly. This rule provided me with the opportunity to play slot receiver which I loved. I am hopeful my fellow captains and I will be able to lead this team to multiple wins and hopefully a championship if the team gets to play a real season in the spring.”

Luke Rizzo 2019 season

With the regular season postponed from its original August start, players had to find a way to adjust and keep in shape for their upcoming season. When asked how he kept in shape during the pandemic Rizzo tells us, “Due to the pandemic gyms were closed so I was stuck doing a lot of push-ups, core, footwork, and dumbbell exercises. During the quarantine I couldn’t just let my body get out of shape so by doing all these little things I was able to keep my body in shape and I was ready for whatever type of season we were going to have in the fall.” The restrictions on multiple athletes have allowed the creative side of our Friars to shine through as they take matters into their own hands to train.

In the beginning months of his final year at Saint Anthony’s, it is vital Rizzo does all he can to help push the friar team to victories. As a fall Captain, it provided him the voice to help find ways to make the team better as a whole. When speaking with Rizzo he tells us his goal as captain and the most promising moments of his senior year; “As a senior, I am most looking forward to being able to lead my team. Being given the honor of captain holds a lot of responsibility and value. I always need to be the role model for everyone on my team to look up to. With a good role model for people to follow, people can succeed in any task, so I am trying my best to be that for my team on a daily basis. It can be hard but I love the challenge. All I want to do is win and by hopefully leading my team in the right direction we can succeed in winning games and hopefully a championship if we get to have an actual season in the spring.” Although speaking for himself, fellow Senior Captains Kieran McKenna and Emmanuel Green on the defensive side of this Friar team share the same values of being the best leaders they can be.

Leading in Any Season

Updated on 06/10/2022

Leading in Any Season

Senior Kieran McKenna, who got his fair share of reps on the varsity team last year, has faced some of the toughest teams in the league and provides experience to his junior teammates. His ability to read the offense and adjust the coverage allows him to be a dominant defender in any style of football. As a two sport athlete, McKenna’s overall athleticism surpasses most; his agility, speed and stamina make him a go to player any time. Playing at the varsity level for both football and lacrosse, McKenna is the embodiment of a student athlete. He excels on both the field and in the classroom, as an honors student and frequent volunteer throughout the community.

Talking with McKenna he expresses his thoughts about his coaches in which he says, “When it comes to picking my favorite thing about Coach Minucci and his coaching staff there are too many to choose from so here are a few. Initially, Coach Minucci is a football genius and he does a better job than anyone else in preparing the team for game day. When he introduces new defensive schemes it is sometimes hard to understand because his terminology is so advanced but he will dumb it down for us and by the end of the week we are ready to go. As for the rest of the coaching staff, they all do a great job of making us better whether it is during practice, in the weight room or in the film sessions. They all know what it takes to win a championship and they won’t be satisfied until we get there.”

Senior Kieran McKenna

Although a team sport, personal development is important to the team as a whole. McKenna who sat behind Christian Taylor, Grant Gifford, and Mike Talbert last year has gained experience and a gameday mentality from his fellow teammates, can now translate this to his younger teammates. With this knowledge, he has developed a stronger game IQ and hopes to use these skills to enhance his craft and make him a crucial part of the Friar defense this year.

McKenna’s athleticism shined throughout the short 7v7 season. With just a few weeks of play, he was able to show how important heart is for the Friar’s defense. When asked about his favorite moment of the season he said, “It would have to be beating Kellenberg in overtime for our last game. The offense bailed out the whole game and the defense was playing slow for the most part so we ended up going into OT. Moss made a huge stop on the goal line and then Sophomore Dante Torres iced it with a touchdown pass to Senior WR Dominic DiPalma. It was great to see us come out with a final win after all of the work we put in since September.”

The St. Anthony’s football team made its long-awaited return to the gridiron on Saturday.

And it wasn’t too soon for a dramatic comeback.

Trailing by six with less than a minute remaining, the Friars scored the game-tying touchdown and go-ahead extra point with only seconds remaining, earning them a thrilling 21-20 home victory over Stepinac in a CHSFL showdown to open a season delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

St. Anthony’s quarterback Dante Torres connected with receiver Frank Ruta on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds to go to tie it at 20 before Griffin Goldstein’s extra point gave the Friars the winning margin. An interception by Mike Leo on the ensuing possession sealed the win.

"We always go into every game thinking we’re going to win," Torres said. "We knew we had to get it done. We wouldn’t have been able to get it done without the defense. The coaches made great calls on the last drive and we executed."

St. Anthony’s entered the fourth quarter trailing 17-7, and outscored Stepinac 14-3 in the final period. Torres described the final touchdown and how the play-call freed up Ruta in the biggest moment.

St. Anthony’s coach Joe Minucci commended Torres for both the leadership and playmaking abilities he demonstrated in those crucial moments.

"Dante is a true quarterback and a leader," Minucci said. "He’s elusive and his pocket presence and ability to keep plays alive is what made the difference there. Without that we really would’ve struggled. He did a great job of rising up and answering the bell.

With high school football on Long Island being postponed from the fall to March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Torres expressed his gratitude to have the opportunity to finally get back out on the field following months of uncertainty.

"I’m really grateful," Torres said. "Football’s my life so it’s been a rough few months but it gave us extra time to prepare and it showed today."

Minucci echoed that sentiment.

"It was beyond exciting," Minucci said. "Just woke up this morning really excited to go out and play. There was just so much uncertainty and even all week long hoping we make it through the mandatory testing. It was a testament to the kids to be able to do what they needed to get done to get the game in."

Friar 7 on 7 Football Preview

Updated on 06/10/2022

The 2020 football season is finally set to begin for St. Anthony’s but in a much different way than expected. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Friars will not be playing contact football this fall; unlike public schools, the New York Catholic High School football league decided to play football a little bit differently. The NYCHSFL will be having a five game 7v7 schedule this fall against Long Island opposition and against Christ the King from Queens.

Head Coach, Joe Minucci, who’s looking to help his team bounce back from a 3-6 season a year ago has to prepare differently this fall for 7v7 compared to a usual contact season. Coach Minucci stated, “These first two weeks we’ve been doing conditioning and strength work, we’ll pick up the football stuff and obviously next week as well as getting ready for our first game. It’s been a little bit of a concern, kids coming in and not really having a full offseason and just trying to work to get them in shape and to be able to run routes all day.”

Sr. Running Back Luke Rizzo

The Friars graduated a ton of talent from a senior heavy team a year ago. Leaders like Nick Alvarado, Mario Escobar and Jaden Jernigan will be very hard to replace, but the new talent seems up to the challenge. Multisport athlete Senior Kieran Mckenna is now the leader of the linebacker core as he’s one of three captains, with senior running back Luke Rizzo and senior defensive back Emmanuel Green. Mckenna will be accompanied by junior linebackers, Andrew Bardak and Matt Moss, two players who helped lead a strong JV to a Triple-A title appearance.

Mckenna said, “With me being the only senior linebacker this year it’s so important that I set an example for the other guys, Andrew and Matt, all the time whether it’s on the field or not. They’re great leaders themselves so they make my job pretty easy and I’m very grateful for them, but I’m used to stepping up as a leader and I’ve always loved it.” The secondary is highlighted by Seniors Dante Antoine and Emmanuel Green. Both of those players had great junior seasons and the leadership between those two will be huge in anchoring the defense in these 7v7’s.

Sr. Wide Receiver Richie Hosien

On offense the Friars’ will be looking for new leaders. After graduating running back Mario Escobar. Jr, running back Luke Rizzo will now take duty as the lead back for these 7v7’s games. The Friars graduated almost every wide receiver from last season. The new WR corps will be led by senior Dominic Dipalma and junior Richie Hosein. They’ll be joined by younger guys as this St. Anthony’s team could be one of the youngest groups we’ve seen in a while. Transfers such as junior RB Dakim Griffin who was a star at Half Hollow Hills West and sophomore WR Keynon Miles look to make an impact on offense in their first season as Friars.

Sr. QB Connor McCreery

The race for the starting quarterback job is between seniors Connor McCreery, Danny Buffa, Nick Honerkamp, and Dante Torres. Whoever ends up taking the snaps will have a very young receiving core to work with, but will also have a new tight end as senior defensive end Gio Silva will be playing some offense in these 7v7’s. Silva said, “The transition is definitely a challenge because on the D-line where I’ve been since freshman year, I’m used to hitting and focusing on bullying the person in front of me, but now it’s a different type of bully ball. It’s me saying I’m faster than you instead of I’m stronger. So definitely a new and exciting experience, something to look forward to, at game time.”

In 7v7 games touchdowns are still worth six points but there will be no extra points and interception will end the play and will be worth 3 points. The first 7v7 game will take place on October 10th at home on Cy Donnelly field against longtime rival Chaminade. There will be no crowd at the game but anytime these two schools get together it’s always electrifying.

Bodden connects with Harris to lift Christ the King over St. Anthony's

Updated on 06/10/2022

By Roger Rubin Newsday

Many nights one can find Noah Bodden delivering food around his hometown of Valley Stream to earn extra money. On Saturday morning the Christ the King quarterback was delivering the Royals to victory against host St. Anthony’s.

Bodden, a 6-4, 220-pound senior, spied Khalil Harris streaking down the left sideline with about five minutes left in the game and delivered a pass right on his chest for a 40-yard touchdown. It was the key play as the Royals scored the final 10 points for a 35-29 CHSFL 7-on-7 triumph over the young Friars in the teams’ featured game.

Christ the King also won the second varsity game, 31-26.

"He’s a talented quarterback who can throw the ball to all parts of the field and takes advantage of the smallest opening," St. Anthony’s defensive back Dante Antoine said. "I know this is 7-on-7 and we’re learning this for when we play [11-on-11 in March], but losing these games definitely feels like losing and winning these games definitely feels like winning."

Bodden attended Valley Stream Memorial for middle school and decided to enroll at Christ the King in Queens because friends from his youth program were doing so. He developed into a Division I prospect who recently opted to attend Grambling State – an HBCU – despite offers from higher-profile Arizona State, Tennessee and Kentucky.

"I didn’t get the recruiting experience a lot of other quarterbacks did because of coronavirus," Bodden said. "The other schools had all brought in quarterbacks who had visited campus and I felt like they might be [prioritized]. Grambling State has all this history and I liked the idea of being at an HBCU."

"He has a quick release and a great mental capacity for the game," Eugene said. "I played and I have put all I know into him. I am sure he is capable of playing at the highest level."

He’s not the only Long Islander on the Royals getting serious looks. Hempstead’s Sean Wilson is a 6-5 junior wideout who already has a dozen scholarship offers but described Pittsburgh and Miami as his most passionate suitors thus far. Wilson takes the LIRR, two subways and a bus to and from Christ the King and said "it’s worth it."

Bodden was 12-for-21 passing for 178 yards and four touchdowns. Harris caught two touchdown passes, Stanley Oxford caught a touchdown pass and two two-point conversions and Wilson caught a touchdown pass for CK (2-0)

Connor McCreery and Dante Torres each threw two touchdown passes for St. Anthony’s. Kenyon Miles caught touchdowns of 30 and 20 yards and Rich Hosein and Nick Iannucci each caught TD passes for the Friars (0-2).

St. Anthony’s took a 27-25 lead with about five minutes left when Miles, a sophomore, caught his second touchdown and also made the reception on a conversion for one point. Antoine and Emmanuel Green had big pass breakups as the Friars halted CK’s next possession to go up, 29-25. The Royals sandwiched the 40-yard Bodden-to-Harris score around a pair of stops to overtake St. Anthony’s.

"Coronavirus has been the worst, but it’s given me a chance to work on my body and my skills," Bodden said. "That has paid off."
