'Soccer' Sanders leads the charge in St. Anthony's win

Updated on 06/10/2022

By Owen O'Brien owen.o'brien@newsday.com

Emily Sanders goes by “Soccer Sanders.” And for good reason.

The St. Anthony’s defender uses the name on social media platforms, so naturally, that’s how she is referred to in school. And after scoring a goal and assisting on another in the Friars’ 2-0 home victory over Sacred Heart Monday in CHSAA girls soccer, her teammates chanted her nickname in a postgame celebration.

“Everyone in the school, they don’t know my name,” said Sanders, of Coram. “They know me as ‘Soccer Sanders.’”

On Monday, she proved why. With a powerful leg, Sanders often is sending crosses to set up her teammates for goals. But against the Spartans, she delivered a goal from 40 yards out, even if it wasn’t exactly how she pictured the play.

“Actually, I was trying to cross the ball,” Sanders said. “But when it went in, I was just as happy as if it was a cross for one of the forwards to finish it. The whole season, I told myself one game I wanted to score and I wanted it to be amazing and this was definitely the game to score the goal.”

The senior’s goal with 8:04 remaining was the final goal. Brianna Passaro scored the first off her own rebound following Sanders playing a ball 30 yards into the box less than seven minutes into the second half.

“Emily had a great cross in and I saw the opening in the middle, so I went for it,” said Passaro, of Commack. “After she saved it, it was still in the air so I just tapped it over her head.”

St. Anthony’s (3-0) pushed on offense throughout, especially in the second half. The Sacred Heart backline, featuring Regan Carroll, Claire Carney, Melissa Biscardi and Lauren Wasserman, did a good job limiting the Friars’ opportunities, with Sara Micheli making 10 saves.

St. Anthony’s’ backline of Sophia Iaccino, Christine Fabrizi, Alexandra Milano and Sanders, with Kaitlyn Mahoney totaling six saves, kept Sacred Heart (3-1) off the scoreboard in the rivalry matchup.

“We all knew it was going to be a bloodbath,” said Iaccino, of Farmingdale, “and this is our biggest game, our biggest competitor, so basically the main way to win is to work together as a team.”

But in the end, it was the powerful leg of “Soccer Sanders” delivering the win.

“It was icing on the cake because for me, it was the best game I’ve ever seen her play,” coach Sue Alber said. “I thought she was deserving of getting a goal and at least that assist, so I’m very proud of her.”

Brianna Passaro again leads St. Anthony's after winning the CHSAA state championship in 2017

Brianna Passaro provides St. Anthony’s girls soccer coach Sue Alber versatility with the ability to play many different positions on the field, but there’s no hesitation when the senior thinks about her desired spot.

“I like forward, that’s my favorite,” the third-year player said. “I like interchanging with the other forwards and getting a goal and creating a lot of opportunities and pressing on a defense.”

Passaro, a Commack native, has played the middle of the field, on the wing, attacking center-midfielder and forward at St. Anthony’s. She finds positives about all positions. But few things — if any — can match the pure jubilation of finding the back of the net.

“It’s a nice feeling, I think that’s why I like forward a lot,” Passaro said. “Especially when you’re down or it’s an important game, and your goal is the one that pulls you ahead. I feel like normally, some goals will change the momentum of the game, so that’s a good feeling, too.”

And it’s a feeling Passaro is used to experiencing. One of the the most consistent players on Long Island, she scored in 15 of St. Anthony’s 17 games in an undefeated state championship season last year. She had two goals and an assist in both the state semifinal and championship games for the Friars, and totaled 20 goals and 10 assists for the season.

“When it came to those tough games, [Passaro] steps up,” Alber said. “And I think that’s what separates the best players from the average players.”

Alber, who has coached Passaro dating to youth soccer at age 8, said the forward always was an elite player for her age group, with the natural ability to finish.

“She can shoot from outside the 18-[yard box], she can finish within the 6-yard box,” Alber said, “so her goal-scoring ability makes her very dangerous.”

But Passaro, committed to Duquesne, isn’t satisfied after a junior season leading the CHSAA in goals, assists and points en route to a state championship. She'd like to leave a legacy of back-to-back state titles and the Friars return a strong team, including defensive center-midfielder Lauren Haggerty, center-forward Brianna Jablonowski and centerback Christine Fabrizi.

“I’m excited,” Passaro said. “Especially after how we ended last year, I’m excited to see what this year brings and to finish out with another state championship, hopefully.

St. Anthony’s biggest threat might be Sacred Heart, the 2016 CHSAA state champions, which will feature six four-year starting seniors — Caitlin Kennedy, Cubby Biscardi, Missy Biscardi, Caroline McDermott, Sara Micheli and Tori Minda. Sacred Heart was 12-4 last season with three of its losses coming to St. Anthony’s.

But with a mix of strong returning players and new talented players to introduce to the system, the Friars have high expectations — for instance, not allowing a goal all season. And with Passaro leading the attack, the offense shouldn’t have many issues.

“There’s a lot of talent on this team this year,” Passaro said, “so I think it’s going to be a really successful season.”

2018 FALL TRYOUTS

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear Girls Soccer Candidates:
I am very excited about the upcoming soccer season at St. Anthony’s High School.  Each year prospective soccer candidates have the opportunity to build upon the history and success of the St. Anthony’s High School soccer program.   Over the years, our program has featured many of the best soccer players on Long Island and regularly compete for championships.  More importantly, our program demands and exudes exemplary character, leadership and citizenship from all members.
In order to give you the best opportunity for selection and membership to the St. Anthony’s High School soccer program, I recommend and highlight the following information:

FRIAR SOCCER CAMP: Register and attend Friar Soccer Camp Monday, July 9, 2018 through Thursday July 12, 2018 from 9:00am-2:30pm each day at St. Anthony’s High School.  You may register by visiting https://friarsummercamp.org/online-camp-registration/.

FITNESS STANDARD:  Competing at the highest level of players requires peak physical fitness capabilities. Each player should commence a formal physical fitness routine by July 15, 2018 in order to be match fit and ready for our pre season tryouts and training.  All players will be tested for minimum standards including the 1.5 mile run, 120 yard shuttle test and 300 yard shuttle test.

TRYOUTS:  Be prepared.  Be physical and mentally ready.  Be committed to the school program.  Be respectful of the school history and reputation and all the players who preceded you.  If you are not present for these tryouts, you may not be eligible to participate on a St. Anthony’s High School soccer team. Please wear a WHITE SHIRT (with your last name clearly printed on the back).  In addition, please bring a properly inflated soccer ball, shin guards, soccer shoes, running shoes and water.  In order to be considered, each candidate must attend tryouts as follows:
·      Girls Varsity Soccer                   August 20, 21,22         12:00-1:30pm
·      Girls Junior Varsity Soccer       August 20, 21,22         1:30-3:00pm
·      Girls Freshmen Soccer              August 20,21,22          1:30-3:00pm

St. Anthony’s High school offers three separate soccer team: (a) Varsity; (b) Junior Varsity; and (c) Freshman. All three levels are important to the program and the development of our athletes.
