End of Season Review

2019 Season
Team MVP: Sofia Termini & Emma Benes
Team Academic Scholar: Emma Benes
This years team was very special they believed in team first they didn’t care who the leader was as long as they won the game. The lady Friars started the season off with a trip to Universal Studios to compete in the KSA tournament with teams from all over the country. The ladies competed and did an outstanding job by placing 3rd overall.
A true example of their never say die attitude was early on when they faced a tough Kellenberg team. The team was down in a game 23-14 and came all the way back to win 26-24 and continue on to win the match in five sets.
The girls finished the league season with a perfect 14 and 0 record and knew they would have to work hard to win a championship. Unfortunately the team fell short of their ultimate goal. The coaches were externally proud of their efforts, never say die attitude, and team camaraderie.

Strong Team Looking To Clinch CHSAA Title
Updated on 06/10/2022
The friars are coming off a well played 2018 season where they finished 12-2-6 overall and fell 1-3 to Sacred Heart Academy at the League Championships in 2018. Head Coach Donna Newman in her 29th year said, “I see this team ranked in the top two for the division.” The league is strong each year.
Kellenberg had a three peated from 2015-17 and owned the CHSAA League title until it was captured by the Lady Spartans in 2018 and now defending Champions Sacred Heart. As one of the strongest teams in the league, they will try and stand in the Friar’s way for the 2019 title along with Kellenberg, who the Friars have defeated 3-1 in their first encounter this season on Oct. 10th.
The Friars will face each of these teams twice. Double play with league opponents makes things very interesting going into the championship part of the season. Coaches are never sure what a strong team is going to bring a second time out. Coach Newman said, “our team’s ability to never quit when we are down, they always find a way to fight back. They are driven and passionate to get their hands on the CHSAA volleyball title.”
With returning seniors, Paige Savitsky leading the offense as an outside hitter, leading blocker and three year varsity player Emma Sullivan, and Emma Benes leading in digs and top Libero this year’s team also has plenty of depth. Newman feels the young players that will be exciting to watch this season are Sofia Termini, a junior setter, along with Sr. Chloe Yagy who brings versatility, playing both as an outside and middle hitter and Jr. outside hitter Maggie O’Flynn a first year varsity player.
The Friars are currently 8-1-1 overall and halfway through the season. They will meet all the league teams for the second time and with category leaders Maggie O’Flynn leading with 86 kills and Emma Benes topping the chart with 22 service aces the Friars offense strength also includes Paige Savitsky, second year starter on the outside with a spike little can defend. Sophomore Colleen McCullagh a first year starter, an asset in the middle paired with Sullivan who leads the roster with 24 blocks and Benes in digs with 175 show the diversity of players on the court. Rounding out the leaderboard for SA is Termini with 312 assists. “Our teams strength is their ability to hit the ball hard no matter whether they are hitting in the front row or back row. All our players are capable of putting the ball down,” states Newman.
From the beginning of the season, and with five weeks of play to go, they plan to be stronger and even more determined to capture the CHSAA Title. Talking about their upcoming meeting with rival Kellenberg and recent confrontation with underdog Holy Trinity, Newman quotes, “Kellenberg we need to be better equipped to stop their middle hitter. They had a number of kills against us the first match. Holy Trinity we need to move the ball around a bit more to make sure they are not ready for the attack.”
With Coach Donna Newman’s countless success coaching the Saint Anthony’s volleyball program for an astonishing twenty nine years, she is hoping to bring a title back to Friar Nation. With help from coaches, John O’Donoghue and Laura Bellotti, who were both former players at Saint Anthony’s and many talented players on this year’s roster it’s looking in the Friars favor to capture the 2019 title.

It was strength versus strength Tuesday night in a CHSAA girls volleyball match at St. Anthony’s, as the Friars’ hitting power went toe-to-toe with Holy Trinity’s scrappy defense.
The power proved too much for the Titans to handle.
Even as Holy Trinity contended nearly every ball that came back over the net, St. Anthony’s kept swinging. Sofia Termini had 27 assists, feeding seven hitters in the Friars’ 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 win.
“You really have to hand it to them,” said Termini, a junior. “Trinity’s a great team. They have a great defense, but we just keep pounding it until it hits the floor.”
Maggie O’Flynn led with eight kills, and she got help from Paige Savitsky (seven kills, three aces) and Emma Sullivan (five kills). Colleen McCullagh and Jackie Cassidy kept the Titans defense honest, too.
After cruising through the first set, St. Anthony’s (4-0) couldn't earn points as easily. Lauren Wong and Sophia Samuels launched their bodies across the hardwood for Holy Trinity (4-3), sparking long rallies and forcing the Friars into mistakes.
The Titans led 10-5 in the second set before Savitsky started a 4-0 run that cut the deficit to 10-9. The lead went back up to 13-9, but Savitsky’s ace later tied the set at 14. Her kill finished a 25-21 win in Game 2.
“Our team never wants to give up, and we always want to push back to keep our win streak going,” Savitsky said. “We’re very driven. We don’t want to let the game go.”
Facing an 11-10 deficit after kills from Julia Colanna and Kassandra O’Brien, the Friars turned to Termini to put them ahead for good. She caught Holy Trinity off guard with a dump into an open spot on the floor, then served two aces for a 13-11 lead. Holy Trinity twice came within a point but never tied the score again.
Termini said it was all about staying persistent with their power.
“Probably the most difficult thing was just finding a spot on the floor and being confident with keeping the aggressive hits, other than just rolling it or taking the easy shot,” she said. “Really just being aggressive the whole way through.”
That style could lead St. Anthony’s back to the top of the league, a place the program hasn’t stood since it won it all in 2014. With leadership provided by libero Emma Benes, the well-rounded Friars are undefeated and confident.
Said Termini: “Ever since preseason, we had that feeling that this is going to be the year.”
