2024 Spring Recap
Posted on 08/12/2024
The 2024 campaign started off slow, but after starting out 2-5, the Friars closed out the regular season winning 9 of their last 10 league games including sweeps over Holy Trinity, St. Mary’s, and St. John the Baptist to finish in third place for the regular season. The Friars turnaround started with a 10-4 win over the defending Long Island Champion Commack in April. The team is currently playing in the semi-finals with a trip to the championship on the line.
Led by five all-league players, the team was among the league’s best in all offensive and pitching categories. Multiple players finished among the league leaders in doubles, triples, RBIs, and slugging percentage. Junior Anthony Carlo is a finalist for Offensive Player of the Year and Junior Phil Mazzola is a finalist for Catcher of the League for the second straight season.
In a league dominated by pitching, the Friars were led by their two aces Kevin Baez and Luke Coats. The two combined for 9 wins while only allowing less than 2 runs a game while striking out close to 100 batters in 75 innings. Baez’s 1.11 ERA was among the top in the league and earned him a place as a finalist for Pitcher of the Year.
“Congratulations to the Varsity Baseball Team on a great season and good luck in the playoffs.”
