Author: Gessica Patregnani, Intern

The 2020 NYSPHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships head back to the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island on Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th. This is the 4th consecutive year and final time the Aquatic Center will host the state meet until the event moves to Ithaca College in 2021.

“The Nassau County Aquatic Center is one of the finest facilities in New York State,” said Peter Hugo, Boys Swimming and Diving Coordinator. “It is a first-class facility in almost all areas so when parents and spectators come to watch an event, they always enjoy themselves. As the Host Coordinator and State Chair, I look forward to welcoming all our coaches, athletes, parents and spectators to the Nassau County Aquatic Center.”

Opening ceremonies begin at 10:00 am on March 6th with competition beginning at 10:30 am. The swimming preliminaries make up most of the action during the morning then the diving championships start at 1:00 pm. All diving events will take place on Friday with the champion being crowned Friday evening. The 2019 Diving Champion was sophomore Alex Kenyon from Bloomfield (5). Last year, Jake Newmark from Garden City (8) highlighted the swimming performances by winning both the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle.

BIG WEEK - FORDHAM PREP

Updated on 06/10/2022

Yes Friars... this is a Huge Week!

Tuesday Jan 21st. we go against Fordham Prep in the Battle of the Unbeaten!  This will be our toughest challenge yet this year, but we WILL be prepared!  The Friars are by far the toughest dual meet team in NY State, and we will bring Fordham our best!

Following the St. Francis meet, I went home so proud of this team.  Shout out to all who got out of bed to make sure they got to practice!  Following through with a commitment is one of the greatest traits of a Friar! You have come together and united.

You are not the 2010 team...

You are not the 2016 team.

You are not the 2017 team.

You are not the 2018 team.

You are not the 2019 team.

But... you ARE the 2020 team!  You are writing your own story this year and so far it's been one heck of an exciting one!  Keep pulling for each other.  Keep working and pushing yourselves and your teammates to be your absolute best as we close in on the biggest challenges of this 2020 season.

LAST WEEK

Updated on 06/10/2022

What a week the Friars had!

We completed our 3 day trip to Virginia/Washington DC with a dominant performance by the boys and a great come back win for the girls.

The best part... we returned a closer bonded team that united to defeat the powerful Chaminade team 94-92!  The place was ROCKIN!

Wow... what a performance!  I loved every minute of it!

Next Meet is Wednesday Jan. 15th at Queen College.

Fantastic Swim Week

Updated on 06/10/2022

The Friars again had a fantastic week!

Times are continuing to come down and I'm thrilled with the teams improvement!
Chris Stange qualified for States in the 50 free breaking a 20 year old 50 meter school record!
FYI:  the Friar who held that record for 20 years, Nick Bedward, is being inducted into the St. Anthony's Hall of Fame in June!  So that was a big record to take down!   Chris also has bragging rights at home breaking his brothers 100 meter fly record by .01!   Holy cow!

Jojo Tonna had a huge meet as a State Qualifier in the 200 free and with a sick 2nd half qualifying in the 400 (500) free!

Sofia Carrieri took 2nd place in diving with her top score of the season so far!
Jon Wu is making quite a comeback and getting faster every week.
Both Owen Glaser and freshman Matt McManus are on the cusp of qualifying for states in multiple events.

We had our annual "Width Challenge" this year that turned out to be quite the battle and tons of fun.
Chris Stange was our champion and here's who followed with some top scores:

1  Chris Stange - 66
2.  Tim Rupnarian and Matt McManus - 65
3.  Owen Glaser - 61
4.  Jojo Tonna and Jon Wu - 60
5.  Connor Brown and Brian Anzalone - 59

Great Job

Outstanding job this past week.

It was a busy one... but giving 100% as Friars do, we got it done!

Great job by Jojo Tonna, Tim Rupnarian, Mark Owens and Chris Stange who qualified St. Anthony's in the Medley Relay for States.

Chris Stange qualified in the 100 fly for States!

Chris Carnevale, Nick Carrieri, and Connor McVea have already qualified for A Champs!  It was a successful week!

Hello Friars!

Congratulations to Billy Swartwout with the 1st State qualifying time of the season leading the Friars over Kellenberg for our opening day win!

We had some awesome swims by: Danny Zahn killed it in the fly, Joe McLaughlin, Ryan Arbeeny, Jon Wu (welcome back Wu!).
Freshman diver Sophia Carrieri in her Friar debut, Owen Glaser, Richie Chiarella.... and many others.
But, the most important part of that meet, was the Friars going 9 for 9 on close touch-outs including Billy's on the 400 free relay lead off swim.
Friars race and never quit!!
We know we have the heart... now let's get working and prepared for February!

Upcoming Schedule:
We have a BUSY WEEK coming up including the addition of the St. Edmund's meet on Sunday.

Wednesday, Nov. 20th - Away meet vs Archbishop Molloy

Sunday, Nov. 24th -

St. Anthony's Billy Swartwout comes up big at CHSAA swimming championships

Billy Swartwout barely had time to catch his breath.

After anchoring St. Anthony’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay at the CHSAA boys swimming championships, Swartwout had a quick turnaround. He was up again in the very next event, the 100 backstroke, in an attempt to win his second individual title at the Nassau Aquatic Center Sunday afternoon.

“That was a tough double,” Swartwout said. “I definitely felt my legs die out in the first 50 [yards], but my training has been pretty good regarding the backstroke. So I definitely wanted to bring it back home.”

He won that race in 51.41 seconds. He earlier was first in the 200 individual freestyle (1:39.98), and in the final event of the day was part of St. Anthony’s winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:07.96).

“He’s been in that situation before, he swims everything for us,” coach Dan McBride said. “He’s been across the board as far as events in big meets, so he’s been prepared for that. He knows exactly what he’s doing, he knows how to prepare himself, so he was ready to go. He’s always ready to go.”

Swartwout had the only individual victories for St. Anthony’s Sunday, but Mark Owens placed second in the 50 free and third in the 100 fly, and Chris Stange placed second in the 100 fly and third in the 50 free. Both were members of the Friars’ two winning relay teams, which is how St. Anthony’s often puts together its best performances.

“That was a big focus for this meet, we really wanted to win both the [200] and the [400] free relays,” Stange said. “The relays, we get to all come together; it’s really swimming as a team and we swim for each other then.”

Patrick Walsh and Nicholas Shopis both had individual wins for Chaminade, which finished second in team points (711). Fordham Prep won with 722.50 and St. Anthony’s (532) was third.

Walsh won the 500 free in 4:38.31 and placed second in the 100 back, and Shopis won the 100 free in 45.64 and placed second in the 200 free. The two juniors compete against each other at practice every day, helping each other to push.

“At practice, we usually race each other whenever we do a race practice,” Walsh said. “[Shopis] would be in Lane 1, I would be in Lane 2, so we both try to beat each other.”

“With the team we are on, it’s all about teamwork and trying to get each other better as a team,” Shopis said. “So you can see some swimmers do it alone, but it’s hard to get much better without a team.”

St. Anthony’s enters the March 6-7 state championships at the Nassau Aquatic Center with additional confidence after posting three times that were the fastest marks in the state entering Sunday, according to results on swimdata.info. The Friars have the top times in the 200- and 400-freestyle relays, and Swartwout has the top time in the 200 free.

“It’s definitely a confidence booster,” Swartwout said. “I know I have some tough competition coming up, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction and I think it’s going to be a fun meet coming up.”

FRIARS FOREVER !

Updated on 06/10/2022

Head Coach Dan McBride ... Often times I get asked..

Are you still coaching?   How long are you going to keep coaching that team?

Well, I often get reminded on those answers.

It's not the championships...   It's not the plaques I love to see my swimmers raise over their heads or the medals around their necks.  Of course we work for that, but that's all the gravy.

This team, this Friar family, teaches me life lessons every year.

A year ago last October a beloved former Friar Kevin Kretz (class of '99) lost his tough battle with brain cancer leaving behind his lovey wife and two beautiful children.   Last year's new years eve, his former Friar teammates were hanging out when Paul Doran said on a whim....

Let's do a Polar Plunge for Kretz tomorrow.
Just like that, about 40 people showed up the next day and raised a bunch of money for Kevin's family.

Now a year later...

I got the text a few weeks ago from his teammates, Coach Garret Golden and the guys:
Hey Coach, wanna jump in the ocean on New Years Day for Kretz?

(I can't explain the honor of still being called, Coach.  That'll be a story another day.)   Paul Doran was organizing another Polar Plunge.

Our Coach Garret didn't hesitate... so neither did I.

11:00 am, showing up to freeze my butt off at Gilgo beach, and I was blown away.  What a turnout!  I was especially moved when I again witnessed the lifelong bond of teammates.  I've seen it so many times over the years, but to see THIS...  Guys in Friar gear, Connor Lambert in a Friar drag suit diving into a 43 degree wave like it was nothing.  Brian Mills making me laugh (through my shivering) as he did when he was a 10 & under, and his family, Jon McIntyre and his future Friar son...  on and on.  Paul Doran announced his glass donation jar hitting over $2000... and I couldn't help feeling proud of something so important.

Teammates are for life.  Some of the tightest bonds you'll ever have.

I thank all those guys for teaching me another life lesson and giving me my answer to all those questions.

Special thanks to Paul Doran and Coach Garret for including me.

Tomorrow morning we load up our two packed coach buses and head on the road.  My wish is for you all to also form those friendships and teammate bonds.  Put your phones down when you can.  Talk to each other.  Swim for each other.  Respect each other.  You are teammates... you are Friars!

FRIARS FOREVER!
