Winter season recap

2023 Recap--

The Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving Team would like to thank our athletic director, Mr. Minucci, Brother David, and the entire administration and staff for working so hard and supporting our talented St. Anthony’s teams.  We are all honored to represent our incredible school.  Thank you to all our Friar Fans and Families that came out to cheer for this talented team this season.  Your voices booming across the pool made every swim and dive special.  We thank you!

What an outstanding season for the Boys Swimming and Diving Team!  From day 1, team spirit was high, and the excitement of a challenging season provided an electric atmosphere.  We are still a young team this year, but our seniors and leaders had this team firing on all cylinders.  Our captains, Matt McManus, and Connor Brown had this team of 27 talented athletes fired up for success.

This team took the top two teams, Fordham Prep and Chaminade, to the final relay.  Although we are half their size, it seemed we were only one swimmer short of an undefeated season.  Coach McBride is very proud of this team's reputation of being one of the toughest teams in NY State to beat.

We swam to a 7-2 dual meet season and finished 3rd at the CHSAA State and City Championship.  That didn’t come without many individual and team honors.

This morning, our top swimmers, Aaron Mendoza, Noah Cakir, Keanne Hernandez, Matt McManus, and Connor Brown, boarded the bus to Ithaca College to compete at the Federation States so they couldn’t join us tonight.

Special shout out to Lorenzo Aquilino and James Augustin, who also qualified, but due to sanctions put on us by the public schools, they are not permitted to compete.

Our 200 Medley Relay (Aaron Mendoza, Noah Cakir, Keanne Hernandez, and Matt McManus) swam the fastest time in NY State History, smashing the Federation record with an All-American Automatic time of 1:32.58

Aaron Mendoza was awarded the Vin Harkins award, the dual meet season MVP and set two new school records with All American Consideration times in both the 100 fly and 100 back.

Noah Cakir won the CHSAA State Meet MVP and was a double winner with All-American Automatic times in the 200 IM and a school record in the 100 breast stroke.

Matthew McManus was awarded the Jack Kennedy Career Award with the most outstanding 4 year competitive career in the entire Brooklyn Queens league.

Our springboard divers deserve recognition as Coach Kyle Gannon had them so well prepared for Champs.  Our divers were led by Junior Joe Giardina, who had an incredible personal best 2nd place performance.

In conclusion, this is one of the smallest but toughest teams in our swimming and diving history.  From day 1, they worked hard as a team and became a family.  I couldn’t be more proud of all their monumental achievements.

To my fellow coaches, Ashley Nimmo, Garret Golden, Kyle Gannon, and John Pisano, it is an honor to share the pool deck with you.  Our athletes are blessed to have you coach them.

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Swimming and Diving Team on a great season.
