Boys Volleyball Recap
Updated on 06/03/2024
The Boys Varsity Volleyball team had a great year. The team was made up of mainly underclassmen and one senior. They had their share of ups and downs. This group of young men played extremely hard every time they stepped on the court. They understood that they had a lot to learn. The boys were the only team this season to take the top team, Kellenberg, to a five set match and they did it twice. The first time they faced Kellenberg they lost the first set 23-25 came back in the second set to win 25-2, then dropped the third set 26-24 but came back to win the fourth set 25-22 after being down by 6 points. Going into the fifth set there was no room for error since the final game only goes to 15 points. Unfortunately, we lost that set 13-15. It was an exciting match one in which our young team would build on.
The boys also had a thrilling match against Chaminade taking them to five sets as well.
The goal this season was to improve just a little bit each day and be ready for the playoffs and that is exactly what the team did. The last week of the season the team needed a victory against St John the Baptist in order to secure home court advantage for the first round of the playoffs. The match lasted two hours and was filled with plenty of high intensity play and thrilling back and forth volleys. The boys went into the final set down 12-7, but came flying back behind outstanding team serving and key blocks to win the set 16-14. The win secured home court for the first round of the playoffs.
Unfortunately, the boys fell short in the playoffs but Coach Newman was extremely proud of this young, dedicated group of athletes.
The team had outstanding play from their sophomore setter Owen LaPersonire who recorded 345 assists for the season with 28 service aces. Liam Hession, our only senior and outside hitter recorded 125 kills and 28 blocks for the season both players won all league honors. Our defensive specialist Nick Amature led the team with 100 digs for the season and added 15 service aces. It was a privilege coaching these young men and I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table next year. Congratulations on a hard-fought season.
Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Volleyball Team on a great season.”
