Head Coach Harry Passante Assistants Rob Ploth, Marty Passante, and Alex Brancati
Season Recap: by Jr Eddie Arens
This past season the St. Anthony’s rugby team has done better than ever before. We made rugby history for our school. With the help of Head Coach/Asst. Varsity football Coach Harry Passante, Forwards’ Coach/Head football coach for St. Dominic’s High School Rob Ploth, Marty Passante, and former St. Anthony’s player/current player at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Alex Brancati, we’ve had a terrific season. From 2014-2017 the St. Anthony’s rugby team won a total of three matches. In the 2018 season alone we went 4-3-1 which is much better than the past 4 years. We beat teams like Fordham Prep, one of the best teams in the state, 19-10. Last time we played them we lost 32-17. We recently beat the Rockaway Rugby Club for the first time in three years with a score of 25-17. We also tied Rye High School 7-7, a school we’ve lost to every year that we’ve played them. For the first time ever we were playing to get into the playoffs but fell short to Pelham High School. Throughout the season we scored a total of 21 tries. Tries were scored by SR. (Wing) Nick Lopez, SR. (8-Man) Eddie Sorrentino, SR. (Scrum Half/8-Man) Asst. Captain John Golden, SR. (Prop/8-Man) Jack Donovan, SR. (Hooker/Flanker) Asst. Captain Jose Medina, SR. (Scrum Half) Daniel Monaghan, JR. (Centre/Flanker/Kicker) James Sullivan, JR. (Flyhalf/8-Man) Captain Pete Hagan, JR. (Prop) Eddie Arens, SO. (Wing) Christian Scordio, SO. (Wing) Jake Tutuska, SO. (Lock) Sean Boyle. and SO. (Wing) Tyler Dalyrimple. Over the summer we will be attending some Sevens tournaments. Next year we plan on working hard to recruit more players, win even more matches, get a spot in the playoffs, and win the first ever St. Anthony’s High School rugby championship!
Nine Friar Rugby players were selected to try out for the U-18 Metro All-Star Rugby team.
