Girls Spring Track Review

Updated on 06/10/2022

This spring track season began unlike any other. Mother nature had other plans with the start of our season, hitting us with one snow storm after another.

After our first and second and third meet were canceled, we finally made it to our first meet in late April . Upon doing the schedule and finishing a great winter season, going to Maryland to compete against the top team in country seemed like the proper thing to do. Not knowing how the team would react to our first meet against national caliber athletes but with the leadership of our seniors, Sophia Lagana, Mikyla Rogers, Nicole Karabaich, Kelly Gaffney, Brianna Burkley, Grace Regan, Julia Schneider and Jessica Riley-Wineberg they were able to lead the team to a very successful opener to the season. We had a great meet with individuals, Burckley, So. Nyha Buttler, Rogers running and throwing well in their open events and our relays also finding great success on the day.

Now with first meet jitters out the way, we set our sites on the rest of the season. Our next couple of meets, were just as or more successful. Our distance girls with the leadership of Jr. Jennifer Furman, had a great season leading our 800 meter runners with the top time of the group and earning the Scholar Athlete award. Sophomore Larissa Dorrian lead the 1500 meter runners with a personal best time of 5:00.03 this season and going into our last meet with hopes that all of our distance girls would run there personal best.

Our jumpers this year was lead by Lily Zgurzynski, a sophomore who has had great success in both the long an triple jumps hitting personal best marks of 16-11 and 34-11 respectfully. We are looking to see Lily improve on her jumps the next couple of years. Our two senior Emily Carlson and Mary Saladino had a great season, Carlson finished second behind Lily at our league champs and Saladino also scored points in triple with Lily. All played a major part in our success at our champs and have been instrumental to our success this season.

This season which was marked by personal best from sprints, jumps, throws and distance our MVPs are Karabairch and Burkley. Brianna being a transfer student came in as Jr has grown from when she step on the track. Burkley a member of our 4x4 and 4x1 which have posted the fastest times in our league this season, ran her personal best in the 400 of 58.87. She earned a state qualifying spot in the 400 and on the 4x400. Karabairch has been a member of this team since her freshman year, competing in the hurdles and high jump. She started the season with a great first meet down in Maryland and has again shown and proved why she is one of our most valuable athletes winning League Champs in both the 100 meter hurdles and high jump, is a member of our 4x1.

We finished second at our league Championships and Third at our CHSAA City Intersectionals and hope to improve on our standing next season.
