Tough choice: State Championships or High School Prom

Updated on 06/10/2022

It happens every spring: Long Island high school athletes getting caught in the quandary of choosing between the state playoffs and going to their senior prom.

St. Anthony’s Kayla Daly watched helplessly last year as three of her softball teammates made the tough choice to head back to Long Island from Staten Island, where the Friars would play the Catholic League title game after winning the semifinal game there.

Now a senior, she and teammate Nicole Gravagna could face a similar situation.

Last year’s senior prom — in Woodbury — had been scheduled months in advance. Dresses and tickets had been purchased, along with arrangements for transportation and other incidentals. No way they could play in a 2 p.m. game and navigate traffic through four counties, clean up, dress up and still get to the 5:30 p.m. prom at a decent time.

Daly was a junior on that team, which lost the crown, 8-0, to Moore Catholic. She vowed then that she would play for the title again if the same thing happened in her senior year.

“For every girl it’s hard,” Daly said, recalling what happened last year.

“I walked off that field crying and, as soon as I stepped foot in my car, I said ‘Mom, I’m not missing this game.’”

Well, it happened again. St Anthony’s could be playing the championship game again on Tuesday — which is also prom night. But the semifinal and final will be played at Hofstra University, which is about two hours closer to the site of the prom.

“For something that I’ve worked for my whole life, I would rather stay there, win this game, and show up to prom late,” Daly said. “What’s better than winning a state championship and going to prom?”

First baseman Gravagna, the other senior on this year’s St. Anthony’s team, said their coaches brought up the prospect of a conflict happening again this year when conducting exit interviews after the 2017 season. “I think it was a good job by our coaches asking us . . . ‘what would you do?’” Gravagna said. “It got it out of the way and cleared it up.”

Daly, a pitcher/outfielder, made her choice with ease.

“I’ve been playing this sport since I was 4 years old and I’ve never won a state championship in my life,” Daly said. “I’d rather do that than dress up.”

Although they may be late to the prom, Daly and Gravagna hope to arrive at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury as state champions while looking their best.

Gravagna said she has an appointment with a beautician in Dix Hills for whenever her game ends on Tuesday.

Daly said she has mastered the art of car makeup.

The problem isn’t limited to girls, either. Cameron Sorgi, then a William Floyd High School senior, was the starting pitcher in the prestigious Grand Slam Challenge All-Star baseball game that fell on the same day as his prom. He pitched the first inning of the game at Farmingdale State University, changed into his tuxedo in the clubhouse, and then was whisked away in a limousine, missing the first hour of the prom held in Wading River.

Syosset High School distance running standout Reilly Siebert had a much tougher choice to make than the St. Anthony’s softball players. Her senior prom is June 8, the same day as the start of the state championships in upstate Cicero. Her competitive spirit won out.

“I’m not really disappointed,” Siebert said of skipping the prom. “I love racing and the atmosphere that’s there. I think it’s a great way to finish out my high school career.”

But, like the St. Anthony’s softball players, Siebert had been prepared for the conflict. The senior prom has been on the same weekend for years, consistently conflicting with the state track and field championships. So, Siebert has seen teammates make a variety of decisions during her years as an underclassman, including attending the prom on Friday night and driving up to the second day of the state championships on Saturday.

The latter option didn’t work for Siebert, who would have had to miss one of her main events — the 800 meters — if she skipped Friday’s championships.

“My teammates did that two years ago and they were all really tired,” Siebert said. “It was a long day for them. I figured, if I was going to do it, I’d want to be all in.”

Great Neck North’s Sam Law, another distance standout who made the same sacrifice as Siebert, said she was having second thoughts about her decision until she spoke to Siebert and was convinced she made the right call.

“Running with that level of talent is something you could never get at a prom,” Law said. “So, I think it’s worth it.”

And — after all — it’s only a party.

“Honestly? It’s not like I’m missing graduation,” Law said. “I’ll still get my diploma.”

St. Anthony’s holds off Kellenberg to win CHSAA softball title

St. Anthony’s Kacie Dilworth had little time to react. The sophomore third baseman saw a lined smash off the bat of Kellenberg’s Shannon Shea coming right at her. “It was crystal clear,” Dilworth said.

In a game of early big leads and thrilling comebacks, Dilworth made one of the biggest plays of the CHSAA softball final in the seventh inning when she snagged the ball at shoulder height with the bases loaded, no outs and the tying run at the plate.

A pesky, top-seeded Kellenberg later scored a run, but No. 2 St. Anthony’s held on for its second straight title with a 9-6 victory at Hofstra on Thursday.

St. Anthony’s (21-2) meets Buffalo-Nardin Academy in a CHSAA state semifinal at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hofstra.

The Friars took a 9-0 lead after three innings, then Kellenberg (22-3) rallied with three runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

“We have great potential to hit, and it was like, ‘Wow, we’re all hitting at the same time,’ ” Friars coach Mike Massa said. “But Kellenberg is a great program and we knew they weren’t going to roll over.”

Kellenberg’s Riley Lim-Ellis, who was named the CHSAA Player of the Year, nearly willed the Firebirds to an amazing comeback. The senior catcher was 3-for-4 with a walk, a double and knocked in five of her team’s six runs.

But it wasn’t enough as the Friars did all their damage in the first three innings. St. Anthony’s winning pitcher (and CHSAA Pitcher of the Year) Alyssa Seidler was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jessica Roberts was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. The sophomore rightfielder was named game MVP.

“I knew we had to play until the last out,” said Roberts, smiling. “We’ve been working for this since October, and preparing for this moment.”

Even when there’s little time to react.

The Varsity Softball team holds the #1 Ranking by Newsday in the Big 10 division for the third week in a row. One reason is pitching;

Alyssa Seidler pitched her second consecutive no hitter with 14k's and walked three in a 5-1 win over Sacred Heart Academy on Wednesday April 26th.  This is the teams third consecutive no hitter.  Seidler also had two RBIs' and Erin Steinert was 3 for 3 with two RBIs.  The Friars are now 6-0 in league play and staying focused with three more weeks of play.

GO FRIARS!

Season Preview Softball

Updated on 06/10/2022

The 2018 Friars softball team returns looking to improve on last year’s 18-5 record and being ranked 10th by the New York State Writers Association in 2017. They will be defending their back to back CHSAA League Championship titles with six returning starters. Lead by Coach Michael Massa led the Friars for 10 years and with an overall record of 174-43 he feels “the key for this team’s overall success will be its consistency and depth in pitching.”

Improving on an 18-5 record would mean capturing the 2018 state title. A state title makes everything better and with two seniors leading the team, Massa knows the state tile is within reach. First baseman Sr. Nicole Gravagna (avg. 228) who will play for Seton Hall next year and Sr. outfielder/pitcher Kayla Daly (ERA 1.17) who signed with Caldwell University only missed one game between the two of them in 2017. That type of experience can go a long way when you have eight sophomores and two Juniors returning this spring.

Sophomore shortstop Taylor Zatyke (avg .393) was the CHSAA League MVP and with Daly and sophomore pitcher Alyssa Seidler (ERA1.1) all earning All-League honors. Daly a 5th team NYS selection and Seidler a 6th team selection, both know what it takes to defend a title. The team will get a early measure of what they have to work on when they open the season against the New York State Public School State Champs East Meadow on March 17th.

League play leaves little room for error when they you open with four road games before coming home to face a strong Kellenberg team on April 15th and close the season on May 16th against Sacred Heart, two of the toughest teams in the league. A tough schedule will mean demanding more  from Junior Christa Michaels, Sophomores Mia Biscardi and Gia Pitagno who saw limited action last season.

The opening game will give the Friars a chance to look at pitching and defense in returning starter outfielder sophomore Jessica Roberts (avg. 277) and Junior second baseman/ pitcher Erin Stienert. Understanding their schedule will prepare them for the hunt for a state title.“

Expectations are high for this young team but, with their “consistent strong pitching, timely hitting and solid defense all season I know success can be accomplished” commented Coach Massa.
