Lauren Hackett, St. Anthony’s ‘D’ leads Friars to CHSAA AA title

Lauren Hackett and her St. Anthony’s girls basketball teammates couldn’t forget what took place on Feb. 13, and it not only helped fuel their win over St. Mary’s in the CHSAA Class AA final on Saturday, but it also contributed to Hackett holding up the MVP trophy after a 60-34 victory.

“Honestly, it’s not always offense that wins games,” said Hackett, a senior who scored just three points but helped limit Kadaja Bailey to nine after her 49-point outburst against St. Anthony’s less than a month ago. “I know that I might not have put as many points on the board as my teammates, but defense is what wins games, and holding their best player to nine points is what helped us win this game the most.”

St. Anthony’s coach Hughie Flaherty said he challenged Hackett to embrace the matchup against Bailey, who was St. Mary’s (15-7) leading scorer and was named CHSAA Class AA Player of the Year following the game.

“Lauren guarded her most of the game,” Flaherty said. “Ashia switched onto her a couple of times, but Lauren stayed with her constantly and was told to never leave the star. The star always plays the star, and that’s how it works . . . She’s a great player.”

As far as the Friars’ offense was concerned, Sydney Taylor led the charge for the St. Anthony’s, finishing with 22 points. Ashia Smith tacked on another 14.

“I’m speechless,” Smith said of winning the final. “I’m just so happy and grateful for my team. We just all did it together.”

“Last time we lost to them and we really took it personally,” Hackett said.

The Friars (20-2) advance to the state CHSAA Class AA semifinals on March 9.

After entering the half with a 21-20 lead, St. Anthony’s began taking control of the game between the late stages of the third quarter and the early portion of the fourth. A free throw by Taylor with 24.4 seconds left in the third and transition layup by Smith on the ensuing possession gave the Friars a 38-29 advantage entering the final eight minutes. St. Anthony’s followed up with an 8-0 run to begin the fourth, building the lead to 17 with just over six minutes to go.

“We knew they wanted a close game and we just kept pushing the ball,” Taylor said.

Marching to League Champs

MARCHing to CHSAA League Champs

Success is what we all set out to achieve and every athlete will work harder than the next to achieve it, and so high expectations were set for this young team in the 2017-18 season. This year’s varsity team’s expectations have led them to a 20-4 overall record and on March 3rd at 3:45pm they will play St. Mary’s High School of Manhasset for the NSCHSAA League Title.

This season expectations for the young team were to go undefeated in league play and capture the NSCHSAA Title. Finishing 13-1 in league play left them just short of their goal.  “We came close however, we’d rather lose a game in the season than lose the in the finals”, said Coach Miller. That one loss has fueled this team and on Saturday they will meet that one team who disrupted their goal, St. Mary’s.

Late in the season, on the road and in double overtime these two powerhouses knew this game would be hard fought and SA fell 68-77. But SA drew first blood early in January in overtime pushing ahead of SM 56-54 handing SM their first league loss of the 2017-18 season.

Saturday will be a true Clash of the Titans with a rematch “we will need determination a solid defense and 100% mental toughness!!” commented Miller. SA fields no player over six feet and only one senior, Lauren Hackett who will be playing for LI University next year. Hackett opened early with a season high 25 points on the road and the team was off to a 12-game win streak.

A win streak is never easy to maintain and Miller commented that “our players returned with improved skills and decision making on the court.” With strong improvements came great performances as Juniors Tamia Lawhorne, Sydney Taylor, Ashia Smith, Toni Kinard and Synclair Taylor all stepped in and led this season. Lawhorne bucketed five double doubles this season and a season high 26 points. Teammate Sydney secured two 27-point games to help earn wins this season against Our Lady of Mercy and St. John the Baptist.

With these two powerhouses set to play for a championship this team will have to achieve new season highs in this game and go beyond the coach’s expectations of excellence. The team reached a top 10 ranking this season but stayed ranked in the top 20 Class AA all season. With strong wins over Sacred Heart (71-47), St. John’s (71-63) and Ursuline School (56-45).

“We worked hard this season and beat some amazing teams to earn respect among our peers,” said Miller. “A win will put an exclamation point on our season and fulfill our goals. When this team works together offensively and defensively we cannot be beaten. Teamwork makes the Dream Work.” Said Miller.

Girls Varsity Basketball vs St John Baptist

Come watch Tuesday Jan.9th @5:45pm vs. SJB

"SJB who is are going to be fast, big and strong! Some people have them counted out but I am not sleeping on that team... they gave us problems last year.  I think we are a better team because our girls are more mature and developed now, but the same can be said for them. We will win, but it will not be a cake walk!"
Asst. Coach Lynn M.

The team is early in league play and will face SJB 2-0 in the league.

Hoops4Hearts Showcase

Updated on 06/10/2022

By Mike Libert NYCHoops.net

FRESH MEADOWS, NY- Basketball for a great cause took place at Francis Lewis H.S on Sunday with the Hoops4Hearts Showcase featuring many of New York's top programs coming into one gym for an exciting day of action.

Two contests ended up standing out to us at NYCHoops.net as ones that proved to be competitive and solid throughout. The overall day though didn't disappoint from start to finish as we know bring you a recap from the day's play at Francis Lewis.

St. Anthony's Stops Staten Island Academy, 70 - 69 in OT

You never give up until the final horn, and that was proved to be completely true for St. Anthony's as you could've written them off several times late in their game against Staten Island Academy.

They refused to quit though and rallied back from a late 5-point deficit in regulation to tie the game up and head to OT, and then trailed by 4 in the closing seconds of the extra session only to rally again, this time to win it as led by Sydney Taylor '19 the Friars came back for an exciting 70-69 victory.

It was a back and forth opening half that saw St. Anthony's build a lead of as 7 in the 2nd quarter, but with Emily LaPointe '19 driving the offense and doing a great job of creating in the lanes and finishing around the basket, the Tigers were able to finish out the half strong to take a 36-35 lead.

That momentum that Staten Island Academy had carried over in the 3rd as Elizabeth Althoff '18 got in good positions down low and finished at the rim on numerous possessions in the quarter to help seemingly put the Tigers in control.

Both Lauren Hackett '18 and Tamia Lawhorne '19 were able to connect from deep and keep St. Anthony's within striking distance, but it seemed as if Staten Island Academy were going to make enough plays to hold on, up by 5 with 9.7 seconds to go.

Hackett was fouled shooting a three from the right win and sank all 3 FT's making it a 2-point game, and then SIA couldn't get the inbounds in and turned the ball over with Lawhorne getting the loose ball and getting fouled with 5.6 to go with a chance to tie. She would hit both to make it 60 all giving the Tigers a chance in the closing seconds to win.

They again though would turn the ball over and Lawhorne had a good look to win it though it hit off the right side of the rim at the buzzer to send the final game of the night to OT.

LaPointe looked to bring control of the game back to Staten Island Academy as she connected on a pair of runners, along with hitting 2 FT's to put Staten Island Academy up 69-65 with 17.2 seconds left. All the Tigers needed to do was maintain possession but again they struggled on inbounds plays, and gave St. Anthony's hope.

Off a great feed from Hackett, Lawhorne was able to finish uncontested at the rim to make it 69-67, and then a turnover trying to make a pass in the halfcourt led to the Friars getting the ball back down two, and that's when St. Anthony's head coach Hughie Flaherty set up what he hoped would be the play of the game.

"We drew it up to get the ball to Sydney in the corner with a good look for the three, and luckily it worked," Flaherty said.

It worked to near perfection as a perfect screen by Lawhorne freed up Taylor, who struggled for most of the game, for a good look that she drilled to put St. Anthony's in front 70-69 with 12.7 left in the game.

Even with LaPointe having a great overall game, Staten Island Academy went another way to the other star on the team in Sophia DeMauro '19 for the final play as she made a drive that was altered at the rim, and even though she got her offensive rebound, that would be blocked by Taylor who came up big late on both ends of the floor to help the Friars hold on and take a come from behind 70-69 win.

Scoring a team high 23 points, Hackett led the Friars in the victory, though Lawhorne added 19, while Taylor finished with 8 but came up biggest when her team needed her most.

In the defeat it was a triple-double for LaPointe who had 25 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds showing off the overall abilities all over the court that she has, with DeMauro also adding 18 points of her own in the touch luck loss.

If there is anything called a statement win this was it for St. Anthony's as they showed off a never say die attitude, and came up big during the biggest moments of the game.

Feeling overlooked and underappreciated, Hackett said that she hopes this win opens the eyes of many who are watching as to just what the Friars can do going forward the rest of the way this season.

"I love being underdogs and we are ready to prove a lot of people wrong. It's really motivating for us and we are only going to go up from here."
